WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN VISITING THE VI OVER THE HOLIDAYS
The holiday weeks between Christmas and New Year’s are among the most coveted weeks of the year to visit the Virgin Islands. It’s our peak season when everyone up north is looking to escape the cold and come down to the tropics where it’s always summer weather—even on Christmas Day.
Will you be joining us for some festive fun in the sun this holiday season? Here’s what you can expect when spending the holidays in our Caribbean paradise:
1. White Christmas here means white sand, rather than white snow
During the months of December and January, you can expect daytime temperatures in the mid-70s to low 80s°F (24-28°C), perfect for lounging on our world-renowned white sand beaches – you may even see people building sandmen rather than snowmen! The water temperatures are slightly cooler than they are during the summer months, but it’s still plenty warm in the sea and perfect for swimming, floating, snorkeling, and diving.
2. A festive atmosphere, with a heavy focus on Christmas
The holiday season in the Virgin Islands is marked by a blend of Caribbean traditions and American influences. You’ll find streets decorated with lights, local markets offering handmade crafts, and festive music filling the air. Island events include Christmas parades, boat light shows, and New Year’s Eve parties (with fireworks over the water), where you can experience a laid-back, toes-in-the-sand, lively celebration. The islands will be decked out in Christmas decor—you will even spot Christmas trees on some of the beaches (though the tropical sun renders them more brown than green!).
3. Increased Crowds
The holidays cover our peak tourism weeks, so expect the islands to be bustling with visitors. Popular attractions, restaurants, and beaches may be more crowded than usual, and prices for accommodations and activities tend to rise. It’s a good idea to book excursions and reservations in advance to secure the best spots and ensure your desired itinerary isn’t already booked out. This means you’ll also get to see some of the largest yachts in the world passing through our waters—literally everyone wants to be here during this time of the year!
4. Fun seasonal treats
Among the Virgin Islands cultural dishes you’ve come to enjoy here, there are some extra special culinary delights that only come out over the holiday season. Keep your eyes out to try black rum cake, guavaberry rum, sorrel drink, coquito, and coconut tarts. Many restaurants also offer festive menus and featured holiday cocktails.
Visiting the Virgin Islands during the holiday season offers the perfect mix of tropical relaxation and island festivities—an unforgettable way to celebrate the season. We look forward to celebrating with you!
