So you’ve decided to take a vacation; it’s been a long and arduous year for you so far, and you’re ready for a break. You choose somewhere close to the water because all you want to do is soak in some rays, go swimming, and maybe even go kayaking, paddle boarding, fishing…all of the activities the area has to offer. All of those water sports are super fun until you go topside and spill all of your personal stuff into the ocean.

In our last post about beginning kayak tips, we tell you that it’s best to leave your personal electronics and personal items of importance somewhere safe and dry, but we know how the world works. Even though we take photos of your tour for you, some guests want to take photos and video footage of their outdoor excursions themselves, and we simply can’t blame anyone for that. Because of this, we thought we would offer up some advice on gear to help keep your phone and other personal items safe from water damage if you do decide to bring them with you.

Waterproof Phone Cases. The Lifeproof FRÉ case is a great example of a phone case that is designed to be drop-proof, dust-proof, and WATERPROOF. This case is built to handle just about anything you throw at it, but you should note: this case will not make your phone float. Many waterproof cases do offer some kind of floatation accessory, so we highly suggest checking those out.

Dry Boxes. The Pelican 1060 Micro Case is a product made for water-based activities. It is designed to keep your phone and electronics (among other things) stored in a completely-sealed waterproof box while you’re out enjoying the water. The only downside is that you will have to take the phone out if you need to use it, so err on the side of caution when you remove it from the box.

Waterproof pouches. The Joto Universal Waterproof Pouch is a good example. If you’re looking for something to protect your phone while staying on the more affordable side then we recommend going for some waterproof pouches. These pouches work great at keeping your phone safe from water damage when those accidental spills happen. However, these guys aren’t miracle workers and have been known to fail if kept underwater for too long or too deep. Check the packaging for details on their limitations and again always err on the side of caution.

Ziploc bags. If you’re looking for a very convenient and inexpensive option to keep your gear dry, then look no further than a good old-fashioned Ziploc bag. Please note: we don’t recommend this option, but if you’re in a pinch and need something quickly, this can be a great solution. Use it for those accidental spills in the water ONLY and fish it out IMMEDIATELY once it falls into the water. The bag will prevent major damage at first, but if it stays underwater too long, you’ll be one unhappy camper. You can test the integrity of the bag by placing a paper towel in it, zipping the bag closed, and submerging for about 15 seconds. If the paper towel is dry afterward, then the bag can be considered somewhat reliable.
