Fun Facts about the Mangrove Lagoon on St. Thomas

November 15, 2023

We at Virgin Islands Ecotours consider ourselves very fortunate to be stewards of the mangrove lagoon on St. Thomas. If you haven’t explored this protected natural space yet, we invite you to join us for a guided tour. No matter how many times you visit, there’s always something new to discover, as nature is constantly changing.

What makes the mangrove lagoon so special, you ask? While the mangroves are often overshadowed by the VI’s beautiful beaches, the lagoon is a fascinating ecosystem worth spending time in. Here are a few fun facts about the mangroves:

  1. Mangroves are true botanical marvels. They have evolved special adaptations to survive in salt water, including complex root systems that help them cope with changing tides. They are also pioneers in colonizing saline environments. They have developed a unique way of excreting salt through special pores in their leaves, allowing them to thrive in conditions that would be inhospitable to many other plant species.
  2. Mangroves play a powerful role in protecting our coastlines. The dense network of their roots acts as a natural barrier, reducing the impact of storm surges and preventing erosion.
  3. Mangroves are bustling hubs of biodiversity. The ecosystem provides essential breeding and nursery grounds for a myriad of marine life, from fish and crabs to sharks and more. The intricate root system serves as a safe haven for countless juveniles, which is why it’s sometimes referred to as “the nursery.”
  4. Mangroves store carbon at rates higher than most tropical forests. This makes them invaluable in the fight against climate change, as they help reduce the levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide.
  5. Mangroves are beautiful to explore. Our lagoon is home to a network of channels that are intriguing to navigate your way through via kayak. No matter the time of day, you’ll encounter an array of plants and animals who love the protection and resources the lagoon provides. We highly recommend our sunset and night kayak tours for those who have already enjoyed daytime adventures!

The north shore of St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands is one of those rare places that manages to feel both untouched and well-known. Stretching along the island’s Caribbean-facing coastline, this region is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful in the world—and it’s easy to see why. You can’t visit St. John without spending time on it. In fact, it’s probably the most popular reason why people visit St. John. ( Who among us hasn’t been lured into STJ dreaming by one of those iconic photos of Trunk Bay? ) However, there is so much to see and experience along the north shore. You likely will not be able to do it all on your first trip here. Here’s what to know about the north shore of St. John:

If you’ve been to St. John in the US Virgin Islands, you’ve likely encountered the wild donkeys around the island. Whether they approached you on the beach, strolled up to your Jeep’s window, or clip-clopped alongside you while shopping in Mongoose Junction, you were likely charmed by the presence of such a surprising farm animal on our little island. Because we’ve been posting a bunch of fun donkey videos lately over on our Facebook and Instagram accounts (if you’re not already following us, be sure to go and join in on the fun!), we thought we’d share a few fun details about the island’s donkey population.

The US Virgin Islands are a great place for both beginner and experienced snorkelers. The waters tend to be calm, clear, and warm year round, and there are many places where you can see an abundance of reef and marine life in relatively shallow waters. We love helping visitors experience the magic of the underwater world, and we have guided snorkeling tours and snorkel gear rentals available on all three islands: St. Thomas , St. John , and St. Croix . In order to best appreciate our waters and have a wonderful time while you’re “under the sea,” here are a few USVI snorkeling safety tips to keep in mind:

Here’s a hot take I have for the US Virgin Islands: Everyone should take a guided snorkel tour at least a couple of times, no matter how many times they’ve been snorkeling here before. I know, I know… you’ve already snorkeled here. Why would going with a guide change anything when you already know how to snorkel? Why do you need someone to accompany you when you already have a fish identification card and rented snorkel gear so you can go by yourself?
