What to Bring on your USVI Boat Charter Day

October 10, 2024
A boat is floating on top of a large body of water surrounded by small islands.

We happen to believe that a boat day is one of the best choices you can make with your vacation time in the Virgin Islands. It is one of the top boating destinations in the world, after all. This is why we have a wide variety of boating day charters available for you to reserve directly on our website. You can find everything from group excursions, powerboat charters, and sailing charters – both monohulls and catamarans.

A day on the water in the USVI is an exciting adventure, especially if you remember to bring everything you need for the full day. Here’s a quick guide on what to bring for a memorable and enjoyable boating day charter experience.

1. Reef-safe Sunscreen

Protecting your skin is essential in the Caribbean sun. Choose a reef-safe sunscreen to help protect our coral reefs – it’s also the law here. Apply it generously before boarding and reapply throughout the day. Remember: Most boats do not allow spray on sunscreens, as they can make the deck slippery and are a safety hazard.

2. Swimwear, Cover-Ups, and a Change of Clothes

Bring your favorite swimsuit, along with a cover-up. In the USVI and BVI, there are some places where it is considered polite etiquette to wear a cover-up such as into stores, restaurants, etc. You will also need to be wearing a full cover-up if you plan on going in and out of Customs between the BVI. By the end of a long day in the sun and water, it’s also nice to have a dry change of clothes for the boat ride back to the dock.

3. Towel

Pack a lightweight, quick-drying towel for drying off after swimming or lounging on the boat. A microfiber towel is a great option, as it takes up less space and dries faster.

4. Snacks and Drinks

While many charters provide food and beverages, bringing along your favorite snacks and drinks, especially if you have picky eaters with you, is always a good idea. Think fresh fruits, nuts, or granola bars for a quick energy boost. Don’t forget to hydrate—bring plenty of water!

5. Polarized Sunglasses

Protect your eyes from the bright sun with polarized sunglasses. The polarization is especially amazing here in the VI, as it cuts the glare and allows you to see right through the water.

6. Camera or Smartphone:

Capture the stunning scenery and unforgettable moments. Whether it’s a waterproof camera or a smartphone in a waterproof case, you’ll want to document your adventure. Bonus if it can go underwater for your snorkeling time!

7. Cash

Some of the quaint island outposts you may visit during your boating day only accept cash. You will also want to have cash on hand for Customs (if entering the BVI), and to tip your boat crew at the end of the day.

8. Water Sports Gear

Lastly, check with the boat you’re chartering for the day to see what they already have on board. If you need snorkel gear, floats, or other fun water toys, we can rent it to you in advance of your trip.

By packing these essentials, you’re set for an unforgettable day on the water. Enjoy your charter!

The north shore of St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands is one of those rare places that manages to feel both untouched and well-known. Stretching along the island’s Caribbean-facing coastline, this region is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful in the world—and it’s easy to see why. You can’t visit St. John without spending time on it. In fact, it’s probably the most popular reason why people visit St. John. ( Who among us hasn’t been lured into STJ dreaming by one of those iconic photos of Trunk Bay? ) However, there is so much to see and experience along the north shore. You likely will not be able to do it all on your first trip here. Here’s what to know about the north shore of St. John:

If you’ve been to St. John in the US Virgin Islands, you’ve likely encountered the wild donkeys around the island. Whether they approached you on the beach, strolled up to your Jeep’s window, or clip-clopped alongside you while shopping in Mongoose Junction, you were likely charmed by the presence of such a surprising farm animal on our little island. Because we’ve been posting a bunch of fun donkey videos lately over on our Facebook and Instagram accounts (if you’re not already following us, be sure to go and join in on the fun!), we thought we’d share a few fun details about the island’s donkey population.

The US Virgin Islands are a great place for both beginner and experienced snorkelers. The waters tend to be calm, clear, and warm year round, and there are many places where you can see an abundance of reef and marine life in relatively shallow waters. We love helping visitors experience the magic of the underwater world, and we have guided snorkeling tours and snorkel gear rentals available on all three islands: St. Thomas , St. John , and St. Croix . In order to best appreciate our waters and have a wonderful time while you’re “under the sea,” here are a few USVI snorkeling safety tips to keep in mind:

Here’s a hot take I have for the US Virgin Islands: Everyone should take a guided snorkel tour at least a couple of times, no matter how many times they’ve been snorkeling here before. I know, I know… you’ve already snorkeled here. Why would going with a guide change anything when you already know how to snorkel? Why do you need someone to accompany you when you already have a fish identification card and rented snorkel gear so you can go by yourself?
